Tethered Oral Tissues (TOTs)

Tethered Oral Tissues (TOTs)

Tethered Oral Tissues (TOTs) refer to restrictions of the oral tissues including tongue tie (ankyloglossia), lip tie, and buccal ties. These restrictions can affect feeding, speech, dental development, and overall orofacial function in infants, children, and adults.

Robyn takes a functional approach to TOTs assessment and treatment, evaluating how the restriction impacts movement and function rather than relying solely on appearance. A thorough assessment includes review of feeding history, speech sound production, oral resting posture, and tongue mobility.

Pre- and post-frenectomy therapy is a critical component of TOTs treatment. Without proper myofunctional therapy to retrain oral movements, surgical release alone may not achieve lasting results. Robyn works closely with referring providers to ensure comprehensive care.

Individuals who may benefit from TOTs assessment and treatment include:

  • Infants with latch or breastfeeding difficulties
  • Children with speech sound errors or oral placement challenges
  • Individuals with open mouth resting posture
  • Patients preparing for or recovering from frenectomy
  • Adults with a history of unresolved oral motor issues
